Jean Valjean was a crook who worked his way up to being mayor. When one of the workers in his factory, Fantine, has an illegitimate child, he kicks her out. Poor and hopeless, Fantine becomes a whore and is arrested by Javert. The mayor (“Valjean”) saves her, causing Javert to suspect he is Valjean. He cannot prove this until Valjean turns himself in as the former crook (so that another man doesn't go to jail in his place). He promises the dying Fantine he will care for her child, Cosette, who is staying with a family that is treating her badly.
Valjean escapes imprisonment and takes Cosette away to Paris. Nine years later, Paris is chaotic. A street gang goes after Valjean and Cosette. They are rescued by Javert. Meanwhile, Cosette has fallen in love with a student named Marius, a fighter in the revolution. The revolution rages on, and one day through the chaos, Valjean finds Marius unconscious and brings him to safety, after pleading mercy of Javert. Valjean tells Marius of his past and it is agreed that the young student should marry Cosette.
